Explanation
This formula is a variation of the prescription Wen ling Tang (Warming the Menses Decoction). It is important to understand although Weng ling Tang is for Full-Cold in the Uterus, the modification to Warm the Menses™ means that it can also be used for Empty-Cold in the Uterus. In both cases, Cold obstructs the Uterus which stores Blood, and leads to stasis of Blood. As the Uterus stores Blood, when Cold obstructs the Uterus, Blood also stagnates in the vessels and newly generated Blood cannot enter its storage place; this leads to Blood deficiency. When Blood is deficient for a long time it may lead to slight Empty-Heat.

  • Wu Zhu Yu, Gui Zhi and Rou Gui expel Cold and warm the Uterus
  • Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong and Bai Shao nourish and invigorate Blood. This is necessary because, as explained above, the obstruction of Cold and stasis of Blood in the Uterus prevent newly generated Blood from being stored
  • Dang Shen and Zhi Gan Cao tonify Qi to help to nourish Blood
  • Kai Men Dong helps to nourish Blood and Yin
  • Shu Di Huang nourishes Blood and tonifies the Kidneys
  • Mu Dan Pi clears any Empty-Heat that might derive from deficient Blood
  • Fa Ban Xia harmonizes the Stomach channel and makes Stomach-Qi descend. The role of Fa Ban Xia in this formula is comparable to using ST-30 Qichong to affect the Penetrating Vessel™ which actually emerges to the surface at this point. Harmonizing the Stomach channel will also harmonize the Penetrating Vessel™ and subdue its rebellious Qi; this is the role of Fa Ban Xia in the formula
  • Yan Hu Suo and Yi Mu Cao were added to invigorate Blood, eliminate stasis
  • Du Zhong was added to tonify and warm Kidney-Yang and eliminate stasis (because this herb is pungent)
  • Wu Yao moves Qi and warms the Lower Burner
