Freeing the Moon® Formulae
The “Moon” stands here for “woman” as the moon is Yin (compared to the sun) and because the menstrual cycle is ruled by moon cycles (see Clear the Moon™). “Freeing” refers to the free flow of Liver-Qi. This formula eliminates stagnation of Liver-Qi in women causing especially pre-menstrual breast or abdominal distension and irritability. It moves Liver-Qi and nourishes Liver-Blood. Compare and contrast it to Freeing Constraint™ which only moves Liver-Qi.

Pattern:
Liver-Qi stagnation, Liver-Blood deficiency, Spleen-Qi deficiency.
Action:
Pacify the Liver, move Qi, eliminate stagnation, nourish Liver-Blood, tonify Spleen-Qi, calm the Mind, settle the Ethereal Soul.
Tongue: Pale on the sides.
Pulse: Choppy or fine but also slightly wiry, perhaps only on the left side.

Explanation
Freeing the Moon® is a variation of the classical prescription Xiao Yao San ( Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). This variation aims at addressing Liver-Qi stagnation and some Liver-Blood deficiency.
- Gou Qi Zi and He Shou Wu nourish Liver-Blood
- Qing Pi and He Huan Pi move Liver-Qi
- Yuan Zhi calms the Mind and opens the Mind’s orifices
- Bai He was added to nourish the Lungs. Even though stagnation of Qi is always related to the Liver, it does also affect the Lungs where it prevents Lung-Qi from descending and constrains the Corpo-real Soul
- Ju Hua was added to deal with Liver-Qi stagnation or Liver-Yang rising
This formula is specific to address secondary stagnation of Liver-Qi deriving from Liver-Blood deficiency: thus the tongue should be pale in general or only on the sides and the pulse should be weak or choppy and only slightly wiry on the left. If stagnation of Liver-Qi is primary, the tongue is red on the sides and the pulse generally wiry, then consider using Freeing Constraint™.
