Explanation
This formula is a variation of Mu Xiang Shun Qi Wan which moves Qi and resolve Dampness in the Middle Burner. This formula is primarily for a Full condition as it moves Qi and resolves Dampness in the Middle Burner and it subdues rebellious Stomach Qi.

This formula is aimed at addressing patterns of Qi stagnation and Dampness in the Middle Burner and rebellious Stomach-Qi.

  • Mu Xiang, Qing Pi, Fo Shou and Zhi Shi move Qi in the Middle Burner; Zhi Shi has a descending movement which helps to subdue rebellious Stomach-Qi
  • Bai Dou Kou, Cang Zhu, Chen Pi and Hou Po fragrantly resolve Dampness: in particular, Chen Pi also moves Qi in the Middle Burner and helps to subdue rebellious Stomach-Qi
  • Fu Ling drain Dampness the combination of fragrant herbs that resolve Dampness and bland herbs that drain Dampness is a very common method to eliminate Dampness
  • Lai Fu Zi, Shan Zha, Shen Qu and Gu Ya are digestive herbs which help to relieve fullness and sour regurgitation; in particular, Lai Fu Zi has a downward movement which will help to subdue rebellious Stomach-Qi

Mental-Emotional Pattern
Key words: Inner Peace. Qi stagnation in the Middle Burner but also with rebellious Qi of the Stomach. This sets it apart from other formulae that eliminate Qi stagnation (e.g. Soothe the Centre, Break into a Smile, Smooth Passage, etc.). Thus, there are three patterns: Qi stagnation, Qi rebellious and Dampness, all in the Middle Burner.

By contrast, rebellious Qi must be caused by emotions that make Qi rise and that would therefore exclude emotions such as sadness, fear and guilt. In my experience, rebellious Qi is caused by one of three emotions: anger, worry and “joy”. That anger makes Qi rise is well known and we do not need to repeat here. Less well known is that worry also may make Qi rise (apart from making it stagnate). Indeed, Zhang Jing Yue says that worry can make Liver-Qi rise. As for “joy”. I am using quotation marks because I feel that “joy” is not a good translation. I feel that the best translation of xi is “excessive stimulation”.
