Explanation
This formula addresses menstrual bleeding deriving from Kidney-Yin deficiency. This causes excessive menstrual bleeding in two ways. Firstly, deficient Kidney-Yin also implies deficient Kidney-Qi which fails to hold Blood. Secondly, the deficiency of Yin may give rise to Empty-Heat which heats the Blood and makes it spill out of the vessels. However, the emphasis of this formula is on deficient Yin and Qi failing to hold Blood, rather than Empty Heat heating Blood. This is the main difference between this formula, which mainly nourishes Yin, and the formula Clear Empty Heat and Cool the Menses that mainly clears Empty-Heat and cools. Thus, this formula is for a Deficient type of excessive bleeding while Clear Empty-Heat and Cool the Menses is for an Excess type of bleeding from Blood Empty-Heat.
Thus, for Nourish Yin and Restrain the Flow the symptoms and signs of deficiency should predominate over those of Empty-Heat.
- Sheng Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae, Shan Yao Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Shan Zhu Yu Fructus Corni, Gou Qi Zi Fructus Lycii, Huang Jing Rhizoma Polygonati and Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae Alba nourish Kidney and Liver-Yin.
- Tu Si Zi Semen Cuscutae consolidates the Directing and Governing vessels.
- Xian He Cao Herba Agrimoniae and Ce Bai Ye Cacumen Biotae stop bleeding.
- Mu Li Concha Ostreae nourishes Yin and stops bleeding.
- Fu Ling Poria resolves Dampness and counterbalances the cloying nature of the Yin tonics.
- Gu Ya Fructus Oryzae Germinatus promotes digestion and helps the assimilation of the Yin tonics.
This formula contains many Yin tonics and it may therefore be hard to digest for patients suffering from Spleen deficiency. In such a case, this formula should not be used for longer than a few months. Alternatively, acupuncturists can pay attention to supporting the Spleen with acupuncture
