Whilst rooted in classical formulations, Giovanni adapted them to be able to better address the complex patterns he saw in his practice in the West.
The Root is origin of the disharmony. The Manifestation are the complex patterns stemming from the Root. The relationship is like that between the root of a tree and its branches: the condition of the root determines the appearance of the branches. Therefore, addressing the root of a tree improves the health of its branches. Similarly, addressing the Root of a disharmony address its manifestation.
This distinction is important as practitioners can use acupuncture to address the Full condition and one of Giovanni’s formulas to tonify the body’s Qi, or vice versa. When dealing with a Full-Empty condition, Giovanni usually preferred to deal with the Fullness and Emptiness separately.
For example, when presented with a deficiency of Spleen-Qi and pronounced Dampness, he would start with one of his formulas that drains Dampness such as Drain Fields because no herbal formulas are particularly effective when the body is encumbered by Dampness or Phlegm. After Dampness is expelled, he would follow with one of his formulas which tonifies the body’s Qi, in this example, Tonify Qi and Ease the Muscles to tonify Spleen-Qi.
Integrating Su Wen Herbs into your clinical practice can free the acupuncture protocol to become simpler and more focused. For example, when presented with Liver-Blood deficiency, using Giovanni’s Brighten the Eyes formula would nourish Blood so that the acupuncture can focus on the local points.
Another example is Bi Syndrome of one joint only occurring against a background of Liver-Blood deficiency. In this example Giovanni would use his formula Brocade Sinews to nourish Liver-Blood and expel Wind-Damp whilst using acupuncture on the affected joint.

The Three Treasures is the “core” line within Su Wen Herbs, with the Women’s Treasure and Little Treasures being dedicated gynecological and pediatric lines respectively. Giovanni’s innovation was that each formula addresses a specific and clinically common pattern within a particular “Organ’s” sphere. Their clinical application rests on acupuncturists choosing whether to tonify only, clear only, or to tonify & clear simultaneously.
Our nourishing formulas are chosen in Empty cases. They tonify the vital substances of Qi, Yang, Blood or Yin.

Jason Smith is a Professor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture based in Madrid, Spain, with more than 20 years of experience. Director of an Acupuncture and TCM school (jasonsmithmtc.com), Jason is a profound teacher and author, and collaborated for several years with Giovanni, and translated Giovanni’s textbook, The Foundations of Chinese Medicine.
Specializes in skin problems, pain relief, and psychological problems. In addition to various courses, she learned the deeply rooted TCM knowledge from her father. Currently studying at Nanjing University for her PhD degree. Through her passion and motivation to understand the action potentials of the TCM she gained fast knowledge in the field.
Paediatric Acupuncture Clinician, Educator, Author, Mother
Rebecca Avern has treated children with acupuncture for over 20 years and now treats children and teenagers exclusively. She founded and runs two children’s acupuncture clinics in Oxford, one offering affordable acupuncture to children and the opportunity for practitioner internships. Rebecca is the author of two books – the textbook Acupuncture for Babies, Children and Teenagers and also a book for both parents and practitioners of Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression. She teaches paediatrics in the UK, online and internationally.
Sharon obtained her BSc (Hons) Ac from Kingston University and Lic Ac from the internationally renowned College of Integrated Chinese Medicine. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council, RCHM and British Medical Acupuncture Society. She practices Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Element Constitutional and Medical Acupuncture and treats a wide range of conditions looking at identifying the underlying cause that is manifesting as the condition being presented. She is pragmatic in her approach in treating and style of acupuncture and works closely with GP’s, Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Gynaecologists and other disciplines to obtain the best outcome for her patients.
Dr. Den is well known for providing pediatric care in San Francisco. She is passionate about treating people of all ages, and her family practice, The Acupuncture Den in San Francisco allows her to follow that dream. She believes it is never too early nor too late to take steps toward greater health and well being. Skilled at supporting people with a wide variety of health concerns, Dr. Den is sought after for all things pediatric, women’s health, psycho-emotional issues, digestive concerns, immune enhancement, acute and chronic pain and the general promotion of physical and emotional health.
Aron studied Chinese Medicine at the Academy of Chinese Medicine in Amsterdam and Amersfoort. During his study he worked for six years as an intern at the clinic ‘Yu Yi Tang’ in Eindhoven. He has had his own practice for five years in Amsterdam and uses the three treasure formulas regularly to address his clients.
Peter has been studying and practicing Chinese Medicine since 2001. He studied Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture at Qing-Bai academy in the Netherlands and completed a fulltime TCM bachelor program in Chinese language at the ShanDong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After seven years in China he returned to the Netherlands to run a private clinic in Rotterdam and is also a TCM specialist at the NatuurApotheek.
